South West England again came away with more awards than any other region in this year’s national VisitEngland awards ceremony in Cheltenham on Monday, with 15 Awards overall including 4 Gold awards and 4 Silvers.

78 business awards were announced on the night, and with 15 of these from the South West the quality of visitor experience in the region has been highlighted once again.

The Visit England awards link with the South West Tourism Excellence Awards which held its regional awards ceremony in Plymouth on 31st January this year.  This followed a rigorous selection process, including judging of nearly 350 entries from across the South West with many of them winning also in the Cornwall Tourism Awards, Dorset Tourism Awards and Devon Tourism Awards. Since January, the regional entries have been pitted against further entries from across the country, with 13 entries selected as Finalists representing the South West at the VisitEngland awards night in at Cheltenham Racecourse on Monday 12th May. These were joined by 2 winners from the Cotswold awards making the total of 15 from the region.

The top Gold awards went to Devon’s Calvert Trust Exmoor for Access for All, the Old Rectory in Martinhoe for Small Hotel, Cornwall’s Little White Alice for Sustainable Tourism and Gloucester Tourism Information Centre for Visitor Information Provider of the Year.

Silver awards went to Somerset’s Coleridge Cottage for Small Attraction, the English Riviera Tourism Company for Visitor Information, Cornwall’s Trebah Garden for Large Attraction and Cornwall’s Gwel an Mor Resort for Holiday Park / Village.

Also winners on the night were 7 finalists picking up Highly Commended accolades.  From Cornwall there was The Pandora Inn, Hell Bay Hotel from the Isles of Scilly, from Devon there was River Cottage Canteen & Deli, Living Options Devon, The Arundell Arms Hotel and Calvert Trust Exmoor (this time in a different category) and from Gloucestershire the Ellenborough Park hotel.

Chairman of the South West judging panel, Alistair Handyside, said: "Once again leading tourism businesses in the South West have done us proud. The leading tourism region in the country continues to lead the way with a huge variety of innovative and high quality products to keep the customer experience at the very highest level and returning each year."
